如果大学英语教师在课堂上仅仅是传授语言知识，辅以听说读写（译）能力的训练，在完成200－300个学时的基础学习后，学生能否达到大纲所预期的目标？（培养学生英语综合应用能力，特别是听说能力，使他们能用英语有效地进行口头和书面的信息交流。）而且随着大学英语学时的逐渐减少，在如此有限的时间，学生能否达到大纲的要求？我想对于大部分学生来说，是很困难的。当然学习语言知识是大学英语课堂教学不可缺少的一部分，但只是其中的一小部分，绝对不是全部。如果能使学生养成好的学习习惯，掌握正确的学习方法，他们完全有能力通过自主学习学好这门语言。
在有限的课时内需要达到的另一个重要目标，就是要让学生自愿地、很乐意地将课堂学习延伸至日常生活中，养成每天学习英语的习惯，哪怕每天就花上个10分钟。这对于学好一门语言是至关重要的，每个学语言的人都是深有体会的。毕竟中国人学英语缺乏一个好的环境，三天打鱼两天晒网是学语言最忌讳的。要达到这样一个目标，其实是很困难的，因为我们的教学对象不是英语专业的学生。但是我们还是应当向这个目标努力。我们可以在课堂上经常向学生灌输这种学习理念，给学生讲讲自己的体会。此外，在这样要求学生的同时，作为老师，我们自己也应当坚持每天学习，而且要让学生知道老师和他们一样也需要每天学习英语，这样会提高他们的学习动力，因为学生还是希望能学好英语的。
第三个目标是让学生了解有效的学习方法和技巧，增强他们自主学习的能力。
第四个目标是培养学生的思辨能力，引导他们对某一话题进行深入思考。教材的每一个单元都有一个特定话题，教师可以在课堂上对这些话题进行具有一定深度的讨论，锻炼学生的思维能力。
最后一点也是很重要的，就是有意识地扩大学生的知识面。这不仅仅是指让学生了解英汉两种语言的文化差异和课本中每个话题的背景知识，还应培养学生对全球最新资讯的敏感性和兴趣，包括时事政治、财经信息、科技发展等等，让他们能自觉地去更新自己的知识和信息，这对他们今后的发展是非常有好处的。这一点对于老师的要求是比较高的，备课也会很辛苦，但这种学习对老师而言也是一种提高。
